A winner of countless honey show ribbons, Julia Mahood is a Georgia Master Crafts Beekeeper from Atlanta. She is the current president of the Georgia Beekeepers Association and a past president of Metro Atlanta Beekeepers Association. Julia started the beekeeping program at Lee Arrendale State Prison and through the GBA assists in starting and supporting prison beekeeping programs in the state. UGA Journeyman Test Study Group

Registration is now open for those wishing to take part in this year’s MABA Journeyman Beekeeper test study group.  If you have at least two years of practical beekeeping experience, and have held your UGA Certified Beekeeper rank for at least one full year, you are eligible to sit for the UGA Journeyman level test. March 2025 Meeting

At our March 10 meeting, MABA will welcome back Dr. Isaac Weinberg, who will be speaking on "Comb-Reorganization In Response To Temperature Stress In Honey Bee Colonies" This talk will present findings from three field experiments which provide evidence that when exposed to long-term temperature stress, honey bees rearrange where they store brood, honey, nectar, and pollen within their hives. In addition, he will speculate on mechanisms that may be driving the reorganization of comb stores. At February's meeting, MABA-member Wayne Hughes will be speaking on the topic of treatment-free beekeeping. Wayne is a UGA Certified Beekeeper and has kept bees since 2010 and has been successfully treatment free for the entire duration! He is the owner of the family-run Sweet Harmony Apiaries in Marietta, Georgia, where they do not use any chemicals in their hives. November Meeting

At MABA's November 11 meeting our speaker will be UGA doctoral student Ian Collins. who will be speaking about small hive beetles. Small hive beetles are an imported pest that beekeepers in the South struggle with. Ian will cover their history and discuss a variety of ways to control small hive beetles in your colonies including cultural, biological, and chemical control methods.
