SUMMARY:July Meeting: Educating the Next Generation of Beekeepers
DESCRIPTION:At our July meeting\, MABA will welcome Dr. Cameron Jack\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor in the Entomology and Nematology Department at the University of Florida. He will be speaking on the topic of “Educating the Next Generation of Beekeepers.” Cameron has been interested in beekeeping since his youth and now teaches several courses related to honey bees and apiculture at the University of Florida. Cameron has responsibilities in instruction and research related to honey bees. His goal is to create an educational program that prepares students for the many challenges associated with beekeeping and to train those interested in entering the beekeeping workforce. Cameron’s research is focused on surveying the beekeeping industry by providing practical solutions to beekeepers. \nOur July meeting will begin at 6:30 pm with a mentoring session led by MABA Treasurer Claressa Lucas\, who will be discussing “Dealing With The Dearth.” \nOur monthly meetings are held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church (3180 Peachtree Road NE\, Atlanta\, Georgia 30305) inside third-floor classroom C302 on the 2nd Monday of each month\, except September and December when we hold our annual fall honey show/pot luck and holiday party respectively. DESCRIPTION:At our Monday\, November 10th meeting\, MABA will welcome Master Beekeeper Steve Esau. Steve began beekeeping in 2011 with two hives and the intent of making his East Atlanta neighborhood a better place through urban agriculture. Those two hives quickly grew into what is today known as the Little Bee Project. Consisting of more than 100 colonies\, the Little Bee Project is hardly little. Steve will share with us his journey to becoming a sideliner honey producer. \nOur November meeting will begin at 6:30 pm with a mentoring session. SUMMARY:February 9 Meeting: Kamon Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, February 9\,  MABA will welcome Kamon Reynolds as our featured speaker. Kamon is the co-founder of the North American Honey Bee Expo (NAHBE)\, one of the largest honey bee expositions in the world. He started keeping bees as a teenager\, and to this day\, his favorite work is maintaining healthy hives and talking shop with fellow beekeepers. He and his wife of 14 years\, Laurel Reynolds\, co-run the Expo and all their beekeeping operations\, specializing in quality bee genetics\, pure Tennessee honey\, and honey bee education. Together\, they have filmed hundreds of educational videos to help new and veteran beekeepers around the world keep their bees successfully. Kamon currently has more than 80\,000 beekeepers who follow him on YouTube. \nDue to anticipated higher than normal attendance\, our February meeting will be  held inside GRACE HALL on the first floor of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. \nTo help us manage attendance\, please R.S.V.P. for February’s meeting by completing this form.  \nThere will NOT be a mentoring session prior to February’s meeting. SUMMARY:UGA Certified Beekeeper Testing
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 2\, MABA will offer UGA Certified Beekeeper testing. The Certified Beekeeper level is the first step of a four-step program in UGA’s Master Beekeeping program. MABA has been authorized by UGA to administer the exam here in Atlanta. To test at this level you must have at least one year’s hands-on experience keeping honey bees. The official text for the program is the 2007 edition of First Lessons in Beekeeping\, by Keith Delaplane\, which is available for purchase from numerous online sources and at MABA meetings. We’ll examine the medicinal properties of honey\, pollen\, royal jelly\, bee venom\, and beeswax\, along with their therapeutic uses\, wellness applications\, and basic preparation methods. She will also discuss current research and historical uses of bee products in natural wellness practices. \nEmily Mueller is a beekeeper\, researcher\, and integrative health sciences student with a deep passion for the connection between bee health\, natural medicine\, and education. Her work focuses on exploring bee-derived substances through both scientific research and traditional practices\, dedicated to empowering others with the tools to create their own natural products. \nAhead of Emily’s talk\, the mentoring session (6:30pm) will be led by Master Beekeeper Deb DeWitt. SUMMARY:October 12 MABA Meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our October 12 meeting\, MABA will welcome Randy McCaffrey (AKA: 628 Dirt Rooster). Randy  has 31 years as a contractor and structural claims specialist.  At the age of forty he developed a fascination with honey bees.  He discovered beekeeping after assisting his brother who is also a beekeeper\, with the live removal (cut out) of a bee hive in an old furniture warehouse.  In 2010 armed with his knowledge of construction and his newfound fascination with bees he began removing and relocating feral bee colonies from commercial and residential structures along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.  As of June of 2022\, the number of cut outs he has done total approximately nine hundred and fifty and swarm catches total approximately five hundred. \nRandy typically keeps forty to fifty colonies.  His family\, including himself\, his father and his brother\, keep approximately two hundred and fifty colonies total.  He conducts studies in much of his work such as mite count and disease studies in feral or otherwise chemically untreated bee colonies.  He video records much of his work and shares this work through social media platforms such as YouTube\, Instagram and TikTok to educate\, entertain and inspire current and future beekeepers.  His work can be found on most large social media platforms under the channel name 628DirtRooster with the tagline “Where Hobby Beekeeping Is a Way Of Life”. \nRandy along with his wife Elizabeth are continuing to grow their beekeeping business by recently adding a subsidiary named Coastal Grove Bee Works which will focus on honey sales and a ladies apparel line. \nOur meetings are held at our new Westside Provisions District meeting space (1170 Howell Mill Road\, Atlanta\, Georgia 30318; corner of Howell Mill Road and 14th Street). SUMMARY:November 2026 MABA Meeting
DESCRIPTION:At MABA’s November meeting\, we will welcome Jeff Horchoff (AKA Dirt Rooster) as our speaker. Bees have been Jeff’s passion or over 20 years\, but that passion was never fully realized until he became the lone  bee wrangler for a group  of Benedictine monks at Saint Joseph Abbey in Southeast Louisiana\, about 50 miles north of New Orleans. It was there that he began seeing bees in  a different light\, a marvel of God’s creation. \nJeff had every intention of becoming a monk. As the fledgling Abbee Honey Operation at St. Joseph was just beginning (as well as his Youtube channel about the bees at the abbey)\, the flood of  2016 hit\, causing over 33 million dollars in damage to the abbey and  washing away 30 hives. \nJeff had to make the decision to call it quits or move forward. He chose the harder route and aggressively began building up colonies by doing  removals\, making splits\, and catching swarms. And God blessed the proceedings. He  went from zero hives in 2016 to over 200 last year.
