DESCRIPTION:Please RSVP to join us at the 2025 MABA Fall Potluck Dinner and Honey Show! This is a great opportunity to enter your honey and other products of the hive in a MABA-only honey show\, as well as enjoy some extended social time with other club members. This year\, MABA will provide a taco bar as our entree\, as well as soft drinks\, ice\, and cutlery. SUMMARY:August Meeting: Making A Living As A Beekeeper
DESCRIPTION:At our August meeting\, MABA will welcome Ed Morgan\, who will share his journey from new-bee to hobbyist\, to full-time apiarist making a living from bees. Ed currently serves as vice president of the Metro Atlanta Beekeepers Association. Operating Bean’s Bees and Honey (beansbeesandhoney.com)\, he maintains bee colonies for honey production all over the metro Atlanta area; offers hive tours through the Air BnB Experiences platform; and specializes in structural bee removals. In 2022\, he was recognized as MABA’s Beekeeper of the Year.  \nOur August meeting will begin at 6:30 pm with a mentoring session led by MABA President Peter Helfrich\, who will discuss “Bee-ing A Good Bee Neighbor.” \nOur monthly meetings are held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church (3180 Peachtree Road NE\, Atlanta\, Georgia 30305) inside third-floor classroom C302 on the 2nd Monday of each month\, except September and December when we hold our annual fall honey show/pot luck and holiday party respectively. SUMMARY:July Meeting: Educating the Next Generation of Beekeepers
DESCRIPTION:At our July meeting\, MABA will welcome Dr. Cameron Jack\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor in the Entomology and Nematology Department at the University of Florida. He will be speaking on the topic of “Educating the Next Generation of Beekeepers.” Cameron has been interested in beekeeping since his youth and now teaches several courses related to honey bees and apiculture at the University of Florida. Cameron has responsibilities in instruction and research related to honey bees. His goal is to create an educational program that prepares students for the many challenges associated with beekeeping and to train those interested in entering the beekeeping workforce. SUMMARY:June Meeting: Preparing Winning Entries for Honey Shows
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for you to begin making your preparations for MABA’s own upcoming annual event\, Julia Mahood will discuss how to prepare winning entries for honey shows. A winner of countless honey show ribbons\, Julia Mahood is a Georgia Master Crafts Beekeeper from Atlanta. She is the current president of the Georgia Beekeepers Association and a past president of Metro Atlanta Beekeepers Association. Julia started the beekeeping program at Lee Arrendale State Prison and through the GBA assists in starting and supporting prison beekeeping programs in the state. She has won many awards for her honey and hive products. When she’s not sweating in a bee suit\, Julia is graphic artist and her entry won the design contest for the new Georgia Save the Honey Bee license plate. \nOur June meeting will begin at 6:30 pm with a mentoring session led by MABA board member Micah Coletti\, who will be discussing “Varroa Treatments: Pros and Cons.” \nOur monthly meetings are held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church (3180 Peachtree Road NE\, Atlanta\, Georgia 30305) inside third-floor classroom C302 on the 2nd Monday of each month\, except September and December when we hold our annual fall honey show/pot luck and holiday party respectively. SUMMARY:May Meeting: Commercial Beekeeping with Mike Gardner
DESCRIPTION:At MABA’s May meeting\, we will welcome commercial beekeeper Mike Gardner. \nMike’s love of beekeeping began in 1968 when the school bus had a swarm land on it at a bus stop. In his earlier days\, he raised between 40 and 50 hives for honey. He eventually decided that he wanted to do more so in 1988\, with approximately 4\,000 colonies\, he began pollinating. Shortly after he started he lost all but one hive to tracheal mites.  He then started buying package bees from Spell Bee Company.  When the company came up for sale\, Mike saw it as an excellent chance to expand even more into the business that he loves.  He has since bought six more smaller companies and a company that originally produced 2\,000-3\,000 packages per year has grown into a company that now produces over 50\,000 packages and 150\,000 queens per year. Based in Bailey\, GA\, Gardner’s Apiaries supplies beekeepers of all sizes and experience with high-quality\, genetically diversified bees\, and queens\, including  Italian Hybrids\, Italian-based crossed with Carniolan and Buckfast. \nThe May meeting will begin at 6:30 pm with a mentoring session led Master Beekeeper Linda Tillman. Her topic will be “Cleaning Equipment\, Hive Tools\, Gloves and  Frames.” \nMABA’s monthly meetings are held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church (3180 Peachtree Road NE\, Atlanta\, Georgia 30305) inside third-floor classroom C302 on the 2nd Monday of each month\, except September and December when we hold our annual fall honey show/pot luck and holiday party respectively. \nOn arrival\, check-in at the welcome table to be entered into our monthly door prize drawing.
